BS 8493 Standard Test Method for the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of a Surface

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of BS 8493 testing. Specifies the test method for determining the light reflectance value (LRV) of different material surfaces, including the preparation of representative samples of material surfaces under standardized conditions.

BS 8493 Standard Test Method for the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of a Surface

It applies to opaque paint coatings and paint systems, opaque coatings (including those with flexible pile), opaque materials (including those coated with non-opaque coatings or coatings), multi-colored surfaces and ordinary materials.

The test method applies to:

  • Opaque paint coatings and paint systems, including those that cause excessive angular dependence of reflected light and have a surface texture <2 mm;
  • Opaque coatings, including those that cause excessive angular dependence of reflected light and have a rigid texture of <2 mm;
  • Soft pile opaque coatings, such as carpet;
  • Opaque materials, including those that cause excessive angular dependence of reflected light, and those with a texture <2 mm, for example, finished metals;
  • Opaque materials coated with non-opaque coatings or coatings, for example, wooden door coated with a wood stain, including those that cause excessive angular dependence of reflected light and have a texture <2 mm;
  • Multi-colored surfaces;
  • Ordinary materials.

The method described in this standard is not suitable for in situ measurement. It is therefore recommended to use published LRV data determined according to this standard to determine visual contrast.

LRV values for opaque paint coatings and systems apply to coatings and systems, regardless of the optical nature of the substrate to which they are applied, as long as the specified number of coats is applied at the specified spreading rate.

For opaque coatings, the LRV values determined using this standard apply to these coatings and systems, regardless of the optical nature of the substrate they cover.
