Although actual data from sales packages and, for example, from a product stored in warehouses are preferred, accelerated storage testing provides useful guidance on performance after storage, as many formulations that underperform in the accelerated test do not have satisfactory shelf life (at least 2 years).

The purpose of this method is to simulate normal long-term aging of a formulation under heating-accelerated conditions. It can be applied to all formulation types. The method defines storage conditions and yields no results. Tests after accelerated storage are not part of this method.

The sample is transferred to a suitable container and then sealed and placed in an oven at a certain temperature for a certain period of time. After removal from storage, the container containing the sample is allowed to equilibrate to ambient conditions before any testing is performed.
