DIN 4109 Standard Test Method for Sound Insulation in Buildings

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of DIN 4109 testing. In the DIN 4109 standard, a European standard, the requirements for sound insulation in building construction are explained and a test method is presented.

DIN 4109 Standard Test Method for Sound Insulation in Buildings

Even if there is no explicit agreement between the building owner and the building planner, it is necessary to comply with this standard when constructing a building. In this regard, the DIN 4109 standard is not only a recommendation, but also a necessity. The requirements relate to the soundproofing capabilities of separating building components such as walls, ceilings and floors. For example, this standard prescribes a sound reduction index of 53 dB for apartment partition walls between other living and working areas. This means that the partition wall must reduce the sound level from the room where the sound is coming from by at least 53 dB. Therefore, the wall does not need to be soundproof, it just needs to absorb some of the noise level.

In the latest update of the standard, the requirements for sound insulation of house partition walls and impact sound insulation of ceilings have been slightly increased. In general, the minimum requirements for structural noise protection are far from strict, even in the last update. As such, this standard does not mean that residents of multi-storey residential buildings have the right to live without being disturbed by noise from neighboring apartments. To do this, the room-limiting components must absorb much more sound than the standard requires. As a matter of fact, in practice, the requirements formulated in this standard do not even meet the currently accepted technology rules for noise protection in residential construction.

The DIN 4109 standard not only regulates the minimum requirements for sound insulation in building construction, but also describes the procedure by which compliance with the required sound insulation dimensions for the components dividing the room must be demonstrated.

Essentially, the DIN 4109 standard consists of the following parts:

  • DIN 4109-1 Part 1: Minimum requirements;
  • DIN 4109-2 Part 2: Computational proof of conformity;
  • DIN 4109-3 Part 3: Component catalogue;
  • DIN 4109-4 Part 4: Building acoustic tests;
  • DIN 4109-5 Part 5: Increased requirements.
