The test measures the flammability of a combination of materials used only in upholstered seats and does not measure the flammability of a particular finished furniture item containing those materials.
This European Standard is one of a number of standards regarding the flammability of upholstered furniture using various ignition sources. The ignition source used in this European Standard is a gas flame equivalent to a match flame.
Adequate means should be provided to extinguish the device, bearing in mind that some combinations may produce a violent flame during testing. A hand and/or stationary spray of water that can be directed to the burned area may be helpful. Other tools such as suitable fire extinguishers, fire blankets and a bucket of water will help.
The sides of the frame should extend beyond the back of each frame to provide the hinge holes and form the rear legs. The hinge bar shall be of nominal 22,5 mm diameter steel, continuous beyond the rear member of each frame along the rear and axis of the equipment (0,5 ± 10).
For safety, the test should be done in a fireproof fume hood. If such a cabinet is not available, a test cabinet should be constructed to protect the operator from fumes.
