Terephthalic acid residues may be present in plastics after they have been processed to form materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. When these plastics come into contact with foodstuffs, residual terephthalic acid monomer can pass into the foodstuff.
Water-like test samples are directly analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detection. Olive oil test samples are extracted with dilute sodium hydrogen carbonate and the resulting aqueous solution is acidified and analyzed by HPLC.
