EN 13138-1 Floating Aids for Swimming Training, Part 1: Safety Requirements and Test Methods for Floating Aids to Wear

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 13138-1 standard. This European standard specifies safety requirements for construction, performance, sizing, marking and information provided by the manufacturer for swimming aids intended to assist beginners in learning to swim or moving through the water while learning part of the swimming stroke.

It also gives test methods to verify these requirements. This part 13138 of EN 1 applies only to devices that are designed to be worn, securely attached to the body and are inherently buoyant or inflatable.

Applies only to class B devices that aim to introduce the user to the range of swimming strokes. It does not apply to Class A or Class C devices, buoys, buoys, life buoys, buoyancy aids, life jackets or aquatic toys.

Bulk storage of some types of swimming devices may present a potential fire hazard under certain conditions. The perceived risk of such a hazard was evaluated against the actual risk to the user from materials treated with certain known toxic fire retardant chemicals. However, the fire hazard poses less of a problem to the user than the risk associated with swimming devices put into the mouth, especially by children. Therefore, flammability requirements do not apply to this European standard.
