EN 1347 Tile Adhesives - Determination of Wetting Ability Test

This standard applies to all ceramic tile adhesives for interior or exterior tile applications to walls and floors. This European Standard does not contain performance requirements or recommendations for the design and installation of ceramic tiles.

The test method involves applying a drop of water to the surface of the adhesive and measuring the time it takes for the droplet to cover and spread over a given area. This is known as the soak time.

Wetting time is measured by placing a 0,05 ml water droplet on the adhesive surface and observing the time it takes for the droplet to spread and cover a 10 mm diameter circle. The test is repeated three times and the average soak time is calculated.

Wetting time is an indication of the adhesive's ability to spread and penetrate the substrate. Adhesives with a short wetting time are generally preferred because they can provide better adhesion performance.

It is important to note that the wetting ability test alone does not provide a complete assessment of the adhesive's performance. Other factors such as shear strength, open time and curing time must also be considered when selecting an adhesive for tile applications.
