EN 13496 Thermal Insulation Products for Building Applications - Test for Determination of Mechanical Properties of Glass Fiber Nets

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 13496 testing. This standard specifies equipment and procedures for determining the tensile strength and elongation of glass fiber meshes used for reinforcing the base coating in Exterior Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS).

EN 13496 Thermal Insulation Products for Building Applications - Test for Determination of Mechanical Properties of Glass Fiber Nets

The tensile strength of glass fiber webs is determined at the time of failure using a tensile testing machine.

The tensile strength of the weaves is tested in both the warp and weft directions. The test specimen must contain at least five teeth in width. The ratio of the length between the clamps to the width of the test specimen should be at least 4:1. The dimensions of the test specimens should be a minimum of 300 mm × 45 mm.

Test specimens should be cut from the original packaged product after the first 5 m of the roll has been removed and at a distance of at least 100 mm from the edges. The test sample will be cut between single warp or weft threads. The number of threads in the warp or weft direction will be the same for the seven test samples. The number of teeth will be specified in the test report. Test specimens should not be bent or folded and should be handled with care throughout the entire test procedure.

Since cutting takes place in the middle of the mesh, the overall width of the mesh strips may differ by ± 50 mm from the 5 mm nominal size.

After storage in aggressive media, test samples should be gently rinsed in running tap water at (9 ± 20) °C until the pH at the surface of the samples drops below 5 as measured with pH indicator paper.

The test specimens should be attached between the two clamps fixed on the tensile testing machine. The self-aligning joint in the upper clamp prevents uneven distribution of tensile stress during testing. The test specimen should be placed perpendicular to the clamps of the tensile testing machine.
