EN 14511-3 Test Standard for Air Conditioners with Electrically Operated Compressor, Space Heating-Cooling and Process Chillers

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 14511-3 standard. This European standard specifies test methods for the rating and performance of air conditioners, liquid chillers and heat pumps using air, water or brine as the heat transfer medium and powered by electrically driven compressors for space heating and cooling.

These test methods also apply to the rating and performance of process chillers. It also specifies a method for testing and reporting, where applicable, the heat recovery capacities, system reduced capacities, and individual unit capacities of indoor multi-bay systems.

This European standard also provides the possibility to rate the performance of heat recovery multi-bay systems and modular multi-bay systems by rating indoor and outdoor units separately.

The heat recovery capacity of air-to-water (brine), water-to-water (brine) heat pumps and liquid chiller packs is based on the direct method in the water or brine heat recovery heat exchanger, taking into account the specific heat capacity and density of the heat transfer medium. It allows the volumetric flow of the heat transfer medium and the inlet and outlet temperatures to be determined.

The size of the test chamber should be chosen in such a way that any resistance to air flow at the air inlet and air outlet openings of the test object is avoided. The airflow through the chamber will not initiate any short circuit between these two openings and therefore the airflow velocity through the chamber at these two locations should not exceed 1,5 m/s when the test object is changed.

The air velocity in the room will also not be greater than the average velocity through the unit inlet. Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer, air inlet or air outlet openings should not be less than 1 m from the surfaces of the test chamber. Any direct heat radiation to the unit or temperature measuring points by the heating units in the test room must be avoided.

The test object must be set up and connected for testing as recommended by the manufacturer in the installation and operation manual. Accessories supplied by the option are not included in the test. If an optional backup heater is provided or not, it must be turned off or disconnected to exclude from testing.

For single ducts, regardless of the manufacturer's instructions, the discharge duct should be as short and straight as possible, matching the minimum distance between the unit and the wall for correct air intake, but not less than 50 cm. No accessories shall be connected to the discharge end of the duct.
