EN 14575 Geosynthetic Barriers - Screening Test Method for Determining Resistance to Oxidation

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 14575 testing. This standard specifies a test method for screening the oxidation resistance of polyethylene and polypropylene polymeric and bituminous geosynthetic barriers. The data are suitable for screening but not for obtaining performance data such as lifespans longer than 25 years unless supported by more evidence.

EN 14575 Geosynthetic Barriers - Screening Test Method for Determining Resistance to Oxidation

In many civil engineering applications, geosynthetic barriers may be in contact with water or aqueous solutions in the existing soil environment. At the same time, in certain parts of the structure, geosynthetic barriers may be exposed to oxygen that slowly diffuses through the soil.

The presence of oxygen leads to a very slow process of oxidative degradation. Polyolefin materials such as polypropylene and polyethylene can be relatively more susceptible to oxidative degradation than polyesters, depending on the formulation of the material and conditions of use.

Test specimens are exposed to a high temperature in air for a fixed period of time using a regulated laboratory oven with circulating compressed air.

After the fixed period of aging in the oven, the exposed test specimens are subjected to a tensile test. Tensile strength and elongation at break are measured for both control samples and exposed samples.

Remove the samples when the aging period in the stationary furnace has passed. As specified in the standard for the type of application in which the geosynthetic barrier will be used, determine the breaking strength and elongation at break according to the relevant test method for both control samples and exposed samples. If the test on one of the samples is invalid, another sample should be tested instead.
