EN 1622 Standard Test for Determining Water Quality, Threshold Odor Number (TON) and Threshold Flavor Number (TFN)

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 1622 standard. This European standard specifies quantitative methods for determining the TON and TFN of waters, as well as a qualitative method for determining any abnormal odor or taste.

EN 1622 Standard Test for Determining Water Quality, Threshold Odor Number (TON) and Threshold Flavor Number (TFN)

Two quantitative methods have been described:

  • A brief method that can be applied when a sample has no odor or aroma or when the odor and aroma need to be compared to a certain threshold number;
  • A complete method applicable when determining the number of thresholds for the sample.

Different methodology is defined for both quantitative methods:

  • Non-mandatory choice in the standard;

Both methods are valid for measuring the odor and flavor of drinking water or migratory waters from materials in contact with the waters.

The choice of quantitative or qualitative method depends on national regulations and the type of water to be evaluated (raw water, distribution water, migration water).
