EN 20187 Standard Test for Cardboard and Pulp

The standard atmosphere for conditioning hand papers prepared in the laboratory in accordance with ISO 5269-1 is that defined in this standard, but the procedure is different.

The physical properties of the paper are significantly affected by its moisture content, which in turn depends on the humidity of the surrounding atmosphere. In order for tests to be performed on paper in a specific physical condition, they are brought into equilibrium with an atmosphere of standardized temperature and relative humidity and tested in this atmosphere.

The moisture content of a given paper in equilibrium with a given atmosphere varies depending on whether equilibrium is reached by absorption or desorption of moisture. This hysteresis affects the physical properties that change with moisture content. Unless otherwise stated, the equilibrium condition must be achieved by sorptive operation.

The process of establishing a reproducible balance of moisture content between the sample and an atmosphere of specified temperature and relative humidity is considered to have been reached if the results of two consecutive weighings of the sample carried out at a time interval of not less than 1 hour do not differ by more than a certain amount.

For tests where equilibrium moisture content hysteresis can cause significant errors, the sample should be preconditioned for 10 hours in air at a relative humidity of 35% to 40% and a temperature not exceeding 24°C prior to conditioning. This pretreatment can be skipped if it is known that conditioning will result in an equilibrium moisture content equivalent to that achieved by sorption.
