EN ISO 19403-2 specifies a test method for measuring the contact angle for determining the surface free energy of a solid surface. The method can be applied for the characterization of substrates and coatings.
For the determination of the surface free energy of polymers and coatings, the method according to Owens, Wendt, Rabel and Kaelble or the method according to Wu is preferably used.
At least three drops of at least two test liquids are dosed onto the flat surface of a test sample. The contact angle is measured for each drop. From the mean contact angles, surface tensions, as well as polar and dispersion fractions of each liquid, the surface free energy of the solid is calculated by means of a suitable model divided into polar and dispersion fractions.
Test liquids will not affect the surface physically or chemically. Test liquids have maximum different polar and dispersion fractions of surface tension. If only two test liquids are used, water and diiodomethane are recommended. If three liquids are used, ethylene glycol should be used additionally. High viscosity test fluids such as glycerol and ethylene glycol may require a needle with a higher ID to reach the recommended dosing rate.
