This standard specifies a test method for determining the flex resistance of rubber or plastic coated fabrics in the folded state. The test method is applicable only to products that can be compressed into the test apparatus used, and to products that can cause the folding of the test specimen to move back and forth across the specimen during testing.
The appearance of the test specimen after completion of the flex number or a certain number of bending cycles is taken as a measure of the bending strength in the folded state.
One end of a test piece is folded with the surface to be tested inwards and clamped in an upper (moving) clamp, and the other end of the test piece is folded with the surface to be tested facing outward and clamped in a lower (fixed) clamp. The upper clamp is then moved to cause the ply to advance along the test piece. The test piece is inspected periodically for damage or any other visible change.
If the tester is turned off for an extended period of time, e.g. overnight, with the test specimens still clamped in the apparatus, the clamps should be placed so that the test specimens are not stretched tightly.
To ensure adequate repeatability of measurement results, it is necessary that the dimensions of the various parts of the test apparatus and the speed of rotation movement exactly comply with the specifications given in this International Standard. Maintaining standard atmospheric conditions and correct compaction of test specimens is equally important.
