ISO 1409 Plastics-Rubber - Polymer Dispersions and Rubber Cages (Natural and Synthetic) - Standard Test for Determination of Surface Tension

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 1409 testing. This standard specifies two methods for determining the surface tension of polymer dispersions and rubber latexes (natural and synthetic).

ISO 1409 Plastics-Rubber - Polymer Dispersions and Rubber Cages (Natural and Synthetic) - Standard Test for Determination of Surface Tension

  • Method A is the ring method (Du Noüy ring method);
  • Method B is the plate method (Wilhelmy plate method).

Method A is suitable for polymer dispersions and rubber latexes with a viscosity of less than 200 mPa.s. Method B is not suitable for rubber latexes containing polymer dispersions and cationic surfactants.

Methods A and B are also suitable for precured latexes and bonded material. In case of disagreement, the preferred method is method A (ring method).

Method A is suitable for polymer dispersions and rubber latexes with a viscosity of less than 200 mPa.s. To achieve this, the dispersion or latex is diluted with water to a mass fraction of 40% of total solids. If necessary, the total solids content is further reduced to ensure that the viscosity is below the specified limit.

A horizontally suspended loop of fine wire is attached to a 'Du Noüy type' tensiometer and immersed in the liquid under test, then slowly pulled out. The force required reaches its maximum just before the ring leaves the surface of the liquid. This force is measured with a torsion balance, inductive pickup or other suitable measuring device.

When a liquid is brought into contact with the edge of the plate suspended from the “Wilhelmy type” tensiometer, the plate is pulled into the liquid due to surface tension. The tool applies an upward vertical force to the plate so that the plate reaches force balance. This vertical force is measured and used to calculate the surface tension of the liquid.
