This standard defines general conditions for the determination of the reduced viscosity, intrinsic viscosity and K value of organic polymers in dilute solution. This standard is used to develop standards for measuring viscosities in solutions of individual polymer types. It is also used to measure and report the viscosities of polymers in solutions where there are no separate standards.
Mount the viscometer in a holder in the bath making sure the tube N is vertical. Allow time for the filled viscometer to reach bath temperature. If the measurement is to be made at 25°C, usually 15 minutes will suffice. At higher temperatures, longer times may be required. Unnecessary delays should be avoided as it has been found that the most consistent results are obtained shortly after temperature equilibrium is reached with a freshly filled viscometer.
This procedure should also be followed when a measured amount of solvent is added to a solution already in the viscometer to create a more dilute solution for additional determinations. Additional solvent should be kept at the specified test temperature prior to use.
Guidance is given in this part of ISO 1628 on the determination of the viscosimetric properties of polymers in dilute solution. The percentage of instrumental errors is approximately the same for both solvent and solution and is effectively cancelled.
