Childproof packaging is used to create a physical barrier between a child and a potentially dangerous product. Based on performance testing against standards for specific product categories and types of packaging, various types of packaging are considered child resistant.
Since the introduction of such packaging, the frequency of accidental ingestion of potentially dangerous products by children under 5 years of age has decreased. The extent to which this is due to the use of child resistant packaging as opposed to other factors such as greater public awareness of the hazards cannot be easily assessed, but there is little doubt that this packaging is making a positive contribution to the environment.
The use of child resistant packaging should be limited to products that are potentially dangerous or for which use is mandated by any legislation, as there may be confusion about the degree of hazard posed by the product if used in other conditions.
This standard aims to reduce the number of children “trained” during panel testing. Since the start of performance testing, much has been learned about the use of children to test child-resistant packaging, and attention has been focused on how the number of children involved can be reduced. Future development of standards based on mechanical testing methods is necessary to avoid unnecessary subpanel testing and is essential in developing physical package attributes that can be used by manufacturers.
