ISO 4591 Plastics, Film and Coating, Standard Test for Determination of Average Thickness and Yield of a Sample by Gravimetric Techniques

Gravimetric thickness is calculated from measurements of mass, area, and density of a sample.

The average thickness and, if necessary, the yield of a roll is calculated from measurements of the length, average width and net mass of the roll, as well as the density of the film or sheet.

Place the roll of material in the middle of the pan or other support of the weighing device. Make sure that the roll of material and the tray do not come into contact with other objects.

Determine the gross mass with 0,5% accuracy. Subtract from the gross mass the mass of the tube or other Object on which the film or sheet is wound, to give the net roll mass with the same accuracy.

Take care to avoid the build-up of static charges that could affect the repeatability of this mass determination process. For moisture sensitive film or coating, time and relative humidity conditioning requirements will be agreed between Buyer and Seller.
