EN 45545-2 Fire Protection in Railway Vehicles - Part 2: Requirements for Fire Behavior of Materials and Components

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 45545-2 standard. This part of the EN 45545 standard specifies the reaction to fire performance requirements for materials and products used in rolling stock as defined in EN 45545-1. The operating and design categories are used to determine the hazard levels used as the basis for a classification system.

For each hazard level, this section specifies test methods, test conditions, and reaction-to-fire performance requirements. It is not within the scope of this European Standard to describe measures that ensure the protection of vehicles in the event of a fire.

Today, all materials used in rail vehicles must comply with the EN 45545-2 standard in order to ensure the highest possible level of safety in the event of a fire. The standard affects rail vehicle manufacturers, including high-speed trains, regional trains and trains in industrial transport.

EUROLAB offers a range of adhesives and capsules to insulate or protect all components of the railway industry. These products meet the high requirements of the new European fire protection standard EN 45545-2. They achieve safety levels up to HL3 and can even be mounted on bunk beds and sleeping cars that traverse underground tunnels, such as rolling stock running on underground tracks.

Railway vehicles are classified according to the fire hazard levels associated with their design and operation. The three hazard levels are: HL1, HL2 and HL3, HL1 being the lowest requirement and HL3 the highest requirement. The classification depends on how many kilometers the tram is in the tunnels and whether it is automatic, double-decker or with a sleeper on board.

Key parameters measured include flame spread, flammability, heat dissipation, smoke opacity and toxicity. For the molding and protection of adhesives, sealants and electronics that pass the tests, the product is approved according to EN 45545-2 for use in trains. A test report will show which tests have approved the adhesive or staple material.
