The distance is measured between a rigid flat reference surface on which the test specimen rests and a freely standing pressure plate on the upper face of the test specimen. The test sample will be the full size product, but it may be necessary to cut the product into appropriately sized pieces.
The number of test samples will be as specified in the relevant product standard. In the absence of a product standard, the number of test samples may be agreed between the parties.
Test samples should be stored at (6 ± 23)°C for at least 5 hours. In case of conflict, it should be stored at (23 ± 2)°C and at a relative humidity of (50 ± 5)% for the period specified in the relevant product standard.
The thermal conductivity of insulating materials is a critical factor in performance, but many other properties such as density, thickness, specific heat capacity and thermal bridging must also be considered.
Naturally, materials with high thermal resistance values are used in the densest and thickest formats to provide effective thermal insulation. When it comes to wrapping thermal insulation around complex mechanisms or filling tight spaces, flexible formats are preferred.
