Classification schemes apply to objects in all technical disciplines and all industries.

IEC EN 81346-2 Industrial Systems - Facilities - Equipment and Industrial Products - Configuration Principles and Reference Designations - Part 2: Classification of Objects

This edition includes the following important technical changes from the previous edition:

  • The input classes of the classification scheme are defined to reflect the “internal function” of the classified object;
  • Classes are defined in accordance with ISO 22274 and ISO 704 principles;
  • In some technical areas, a three-level classification scheme has been defined, giving the designer more flexibility;
  • Classes are defined by their definition and are provided with a preferred term. Samples are provided if needed;
  • A separate classification scheme is provided for venues.

The purpose of classification is to distinguish between objects in a collection based on the differentiation of features of interest. Classes are organized into type-relationships and are defined by different values of a particular property of interest.

The class name (preferred term) assigned to classes and the term examples given in this document are based on the inherent function of an object that is independent of any implementation.

This classification scheme provides a lifecycle stable class code as stable object generation is classified by the stable intrinsic function of object generation.

All examples and terms in the classification scheme of this standard are considered to have been used to name a member of their class. Because different branches have different terminology usage, the same example or term may appear in different classes.
