The test is used to determine the dimensional stability temperature of specimens of certain sizes exposed to increasing temperatures in a liquid heat transfer medium with constant bending stress. In this standard, a distinction is made between 3 different methods for determining the deflection temperature, which differs in the applied bending stress.
It will be decided in individual cases or the method to be used for testing will be specified in the product standards. Method C is recommended for high-temperature resistant plastics where the deflection temperature is above the maximum operating temperature of the heat transfer device according to Methods A and B.
The values obtained according to this standard are used to evaluate the behavior of plastics under bending stress at temperatures higher than room temperature. Direct transfer of test results to certain applications is only permitted if the time, temperature and bending stress conditions are similar to those specified in this standard.
The values obtained are not representative of the highest service temperatures since they depend on the mentioned variable effects. Dimensional stability under heat is the ability of a test specimen to substantially retain its shape under a certain static load up to a certain temperature. The thermal degradation temperature is characterized by the degradation temperature in this standard.
The dimensional stability temperature HDT (thermal deflection temperature) according to this standard is the temperature at which a bending test specimen, evenly heated in a liquid heat transfer medium and supported on both sides, reaches a certain deflection under a certain force.
