The permeability of a thermoplastic film to a gaseous composition depends on the nature of the film, the properties of the chemical components of the gaseous composition and environmental conditions. A variety of values can be used to characterize the permeability of a gaseous composition, including flux, diffusion coefficient, and mass transfer coefficient (MTC).
The flux and diffusion coefficient depend on the concentration gradient across the film. However, it is accepted that the mass transfer coefficient is independent of the concentration gradient and depends only on the properties of the film and the chemical components of the gas, in addition to environmental conditions such as temperature and relative humidity on both sides of the film. It follows that the mass transfer coefficient is a suitable parameter to represent the permeability to a particular gas composition.
