EN 71-1 Safety of Toys - Mechanical and Physical Properties

This European Standard applies to toys for children; Toys are any product or material designed or designed exclusively for use in play by children under 14 years of age. new

Contains specific requirements for toys designed for children under 36 months, children under 18 months, and children too young to sit up unaided. According to Directive 2009/48/EC "For Use" means that a parent or guardian can reasonably assume due to its functions, dimensions and features a toy intended for use by children of the specified age group.

Therefore, for the purposes of this European Standard, soft-filled toys with simple features for holding and cuddling, for example, are considered toys for children under 36 months of age.

This European Standard also specifies requirements for packaging, marking and labeling This European Standard does not cover musical instruments, sports equipment or similar items, but includes their toy counterparts.

This European Standard does not apply to the following toys:

playground equipment for general use;
Automatic gaming machines for public use, coin-operated or unused;
toy vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines (clause A.2);
Toy steam engines;
Toy slings and toy catapults supplied without bullets.

Toy slings and toy catapults supplied with projectiles are within the scope of this standard.
