EN ISO 10545-11 Ceramic Tiles, Part 11: Standard Test for Determining Cracking Resistance for Glazed Tiles

Determining the resistance of all tiles to crack formation by steaming at high pressure in the autoclave allows the tiles to be examined for punctures after staining the glazed surfaces.

At least five whole tiles will be tested. Exceptionally large tiles may be cut into pieces for autoclave storage, but all pieces must be tested. The cut pieces should be as large as possible.

First inspect the tiles for visible defects by inspecting the tiles with the naked eye (or usually with glasses if worn) from a distance of 300 cm to 25 cm under illumination of approximately 30 lx. All test specimens should be free of cracks at the start of the test.
