EN ISO 5659-3 Plastics - Standard Test for Determination of Optical Density by Dynamic Flow Method

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 5659-3 testing. This part of EN ISO 5659 specifies a method for measuring smoke production from the exposed surface of substantially flat materials, composites or assemblies not exceeding 25 mm in thickness when placed horizontally and exposed to certain levels of thermal radiation under forced ventilation.

EN ISO 5659-3 Plastics - Standard Test for Determination of Optical Density by Dynamic Flow Method

This test method is applicable to plastics and can also be used to evaluate other materials (e.g. rubbers, textile coatings, painted surfaces, wood and other building materials).

The optical density values determined by this test are specific to the specimen or mounting material of the form and thickness tested and should not be considered as inherent, essential properties. The test is intended for use in research and development and is not primarily a basis for ratings for building codes or other purposes. No basis is provided for estimating the smoke density that materials can produce after exposure to heat and flame under other exposure conditions, such as end-use conditions, and no correlation has been established with measurements from other test methods.

The resulting smoke is transmitted to an exhaust system consisting of an awning hood, duct and fan. The duct contains both an orifice plate, which is the pressure used to monitor the velocity of the airflow through the duct, and photometric equipment to measure the optical density of the smoke waste stream throughout the test. Results are reported in terms of optical density measured over the test period.

The exhaust system can be used table-mounted with the separator, or it can be installed in the test chamber described in EN ISO 5659-2, which is used with the chamber door closed but the blower panel removed. No matter which exhaust mounting configuration is used, the starting procedure is similar. No studies have yet been conducted to determine whether tests performed under the same flow and heat flow conditions but with different exhaust mounting configurations will yield similar results.
