EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 14366 standard. This standard specifies methods for the measurement of air and structure emitted sound produced in wastewater and storm water installations under laboratory conditions and defines the expression of results.
It can be applied to wastewater piping systems and their parts, but not to actual sources of wastewater, for example toilets, bathtubs or any active units. It is applicable to pipes made of any common material with natural ventilation and commonly used diameters (up to 150 mm).
The results obtained can be used to compare products and materials. It can serve to predict the behavior of wastewater systems in a building under certain conditions. However, this standard does not provide a normalized procedure for calculating the acoustic characteristics of such installations in a building.
Noise from wastewater installations is generated by the flow and fall of water in the piping system. There are many different ways to install such systems in buildings, depending on national building codes. They can be firmly attached to walls and floors, fixed to walls and covered boards with clips, or hung exposed in the plenum above a false ceiling. It is therefore recommended to define measurement methods for both structural and airborne sound.
Important sources of noise are folds after vertical sections and also discontinuities, eg. inlets, couplings and sleeves. Furthermore, the noise impact on a building's occupants is highly dependent on the material properties of the pipes, the methods used to join and secure the pipes, and local construction practices.
