ISO 22516 Paints and Varnishes - Practical Determination of Non-Volatile and Volatile Substance Content During Application

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of ISO 22516 testing. This standard specifies a test method for the determination of non-volatile matter in coatings immediately after application or after intermediate or final drying.

ISO 22516 Paints and Varnishes - Practical Determination of Non-Volatile and Volatile Substance Content During Application

In practice, the determination of volatile matter is particularly applicable to water-dilutable coatings that are recoated with an additional coating material. The method can also be used to compare the efficiency of different application and drying methods.

The non-volatile or volatile content of a product after application is not an absolute variable but depends on the application and drying conditions applied at the time of testing. As a result, application of this method gives only relative values, not actual values, for non-volatile matter content due to solvent retention, thermal decomposition, and evaporation of low molecular contents.

An aluminum foil or test panel in the spray booth in production or in the laboratory is coated in accordance with the specified conditions. The coated aluminum foil or test panel is carefully folded in half and weighed after the inspection process step and then unfolded. The aluminum foil is then dried in a horizontal position in the laboratory drying box in accordance with the agreed drying conditions and then weighed. The content of non-volatile or volatile matter is calculated from the difference.

Detection of non-volatile and volatile substances can be carried out directly on the coating object during the coating process in production or in a laboratory spray booth. Method A is suitable for both coating locations, while method B should be limited to application in the laboratory spray booth. Only for the processing procedure of method A, contamination of recently applied coatings can be avoided.
