ISO 28706-2 specifies a test method for determining the resistance of flat surfaces of vitreous and porcelain enamels to boiling acids, boiling neutral liquids, alkaline liquids or their vapors.
This method allows the simultaneous determination of the resistance of vitreous and porcelain enamels to the liquid and vapor phases of the corrosive medium.
Similarly, a series of enamel-coated test specimens are placed in the liquid region or vapor region of the tester as required and subjected to attack by boiling acid or boiling neutral liquid or vapor under specified conditions.
The same tester design and the same test principle are used for different liquids. The mass loss is determined and used to calculate the mass loss rate per unit area and, if necessary, the corrosion rate.
The most important parameters affecting the aqueous corrosion of enamel are enamel quality, temperature and pH value. Inhibitory effects from the limited solubility of silica may also contribute.
In boiling aqueous acids, the enamel's silica network is attacked and silica and other enamel components are released into solution. However, the solubility of silica in acids is low. Soon, the attacking solutions will be saturated with dissolved silica and then simply leach the surface. Acid attack is prevented and the corrosion rate is markedly reduced.
