DIN 53438-2 Testing Combustible Materials - Ignition Response to a Small Flame - Standard Test for Edge Ignition

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of DIN 53438-2 testing. This standard specifies the test method for determining the behavior of materials when exposed to edge flames, called the K method for short.

10 samples are produced or taken from the product to be tested. In the case of anisotropic products, attention should be paid to the extraction direction.

The samples are 190 mm long and 90 mm wide. The thickness depends on the specifications of the product in question or will be agreed upon. Samples whose thickness does not deviate more than ± 10% from the thickness of the old samples at any measurement point shall be used. If these allowable deviations are exceeded, this should be stated in the test report.

A MEG mark is placed on each sample at a distance of 150 mm from the bottom edge during testing. The test sample is ignited for 15 seconds and then the burner is pushed back. Care should be taken to avoid disturbing airflow.

The burning time from the beginning of the flame application until the flame on the test sample goes out or the flame tip of the burning test sample reaches the Meg mark is measured. If the sample continues to glow after the flame is extinguished, the smoldering time is measured between the extinguishing of the flame on the sample and the end of the smoldering phenomenon.

Special observations during the test such as smoke and stain formation, falling and dripping of test specimen parts, continuous burning of falling or dripping parts of the test specimen, appearance of the enamel edge (e.g. a frame), lagging behind, burning on both sides or one side, withdrawing the specimen from the flame, combustion from a hole, the course of combustion is specified in the test report.
