DIN 7984 Standard Test Method for Low Profile Head Hexagon Socket Cap Screws

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 14052 standard. In the DIN 7984 standard published by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), low profile head hex socket head screws are designed for use where reduced head height is important.

Due to the reduced head heights, the socket size has also been reduced and therefore cannot be preloaded to the same degree as a standard hex socket head screw. As a result, a low head socket head screw cannot be subjected to similar maximum loads as a standard head socket head screw of similar size and material.

In the mentioned standard, the requirements for low profile head hexagon socket cap screws are listed under the following headings:

  • Mechanical properties of stainless steel for low profile head hexagon socket cap screws;
  • Chemical composition of stainless steel for low profile head hex socket cap screws;
  • Mechanical properties of steel for low profile head hexagon socket cap screws;
  • Chemical composition of steel for low profile head hex socket cap screws.

Briefly, low profile head hex socket cap screws are threaded connections with a reduced height cylindrical head and hex socket drive. These screws are turned using a hex wrench.

Low socket head screws are used where there is no clearance to use a regular socket head screw. However, due to the less grip of the hex wrench, there is a higher chance of popping out causing damage to the hex recess.

The pilot recess is intended to accept a hex wrench with a tap, making the wrench less likely to pop out and damage the low head socket cap screw. However, it will never be fully tapped as the lead hole extends beyond the head of the fastener. Such screws are typically manufactured from grade 8.8 material. This steel material is the most common form of high tensile material.
