EN 1021-1 Upholstered Furniture Flammability - Test for Ignition Source Burning Cigarette

The test measures the flammability of a combination of materials used only in upholstered seats and does not measure the flammability of a particular finished furniture item containing those materials.

This European Standard is one of a number of standards regarding the flammability of upholstered furniture using various ignition sources. The ignition source used in this European Standard is a gas flame equivalent to a match flame.

Tests are performed in a test cabinet with calibrated airflow. Combinations of cover fabrics and filling materials used in upholstered furniture are tested. Cover fabrics can also be tested with a standard PU filler. Covered and filled steel test bench is mounted to form a 90º angle between the seat and the back. The ignition sources are located at the junction between the seat and the back.

During the cigarette test, the test device is not allowed to smolder after one hour from the start of the test. The test apparatus is also not allowed to smolder up to the ends of the sample.

The test assembly is exposed to a gas flame equivalent to the flame of a match for 15 seconds. It is not allowed to continue the flame for more than 120 seconds after removing the burner tube.

Prior to testing, all exterior coatings that have been chemically treated to reduce their flammability should be subjected to a water soaking and drying procedure.

The Product Safety Act applies to an upholstered furniture, and one of the safety risks is fire. Upholstered furniture sold to an individual consumer must be able to withstand a lit cigarette for a fixed period of time without igniting the upholstery. Cinemas, hotels, restaurants, etc. Upholstered furniture must at least meet the requirements of both EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2.
