EN 12091 Thermal Insulation Products for Building Applications - Standard Test Method for Determination of Freeze-Thaw Resistance

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 12091 testing. This European Standard specifies equipment and procedures for determining the effect of sequential cycling from dry conditions at -20°C to wet conditions at 20°C on the mechanical properties and moisture content of the product. Applicable to thermal insulation products.

EN 12091 Thermal Insulation Products for Building Applications - Standard Test Method for Determination of Freeze-Thaw Resistance

It is aimed to simulate freeze-thaw effects on thermal insulation products that are frequently exposed to water and low temperature conditions, such as inverted roofs and unprotected floor insulation. This test method is not recommended for all thermal insulation products. If relevant, the product standards will specify for which products this standard applies.

Freeze-thaw resistance is determined as the change in the amount of water absorbed and the change in compressive strength or stress of a test specimen subjected to 20 consecutive cycles from dry conditions at -20°C to wet conditions at 300°C.

The test is performed in conjunction with one of the following long-term water absorption tests:

  • Water absorption by diffusion according to EN 12088;
  • Water absorption by full immersion according to EN 12087.

The freeze-thaw test should be performed on the same test specimens, referred to as group A, used for the determination of long-term water absorption by diffusion according to EN 12088 or by complete immersion according to EN 12087.

The thickness of the test specimens shall be the thickness of the original product. The test specimens for group A will be square cut squares with sides (500 ± 1) mm or (200 ± 1) mm, depending on the water absorption test chosen.

If possible, test specimens should be cut so that they do not include the original product edges. The cutting of test samples will be by methods that do not change the original structure of the product. All skins, skins or overlays will be preserved.
