EN 12201-2 Plastic Pipe Systems for Water Supply and Pressure Drainage and Sewer - Polyethylene (PE) - Pipes

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 12201-2 testing. This European Standard specifies the requirements for pipes made of polyethylene (PE 100, PE 80 and PE 40) for buried and above-ground applications for the transport of water intended for human use, raw water before treatment, drainage and sewage under pressure.

EN 12201-2 Plastic Pipe Systems for Water Supply and Pressure Drainage and Sewer - Polyethylene (PE) - Pipes

In conjunction with Part 12201 and Part 1 to 3 of EN 5, it is applicable to PE pipes, their joints and connections with PE components, and other materials intended for use under the following conditions:

  • permissible working pressure;
  • an operating temperature of 20°C as the reference temperature;
  • buried in the ground;
  • Marine discharges;
  • Submerged in water;
  • Above ground, including pipes hanging under bridges.

The standard covers a range of issues related to the design, manufacture and testing of PE pipes. These include:

Materials: The standard specifies the requirements for materials used in the manufacture of PE pipes. This includes the base resin, additives and pigments.

Dimensions and tolerances: The standard specifies dimensions and tolerances for PE pipes. This includes outside diameter, wall thickness and length.

Performance requirements: The standard specifies performance requirements for PE pipes. This includes testing for long-term hydrostatic strength, resistance to slow crack growth, and resistance to rapid crack propagation.

Marking: The standard specifies the requirements for marking PE pipes. This includes the manufacturer's name, piping material, nominal size, pressure rating and date of manufacture.

Test: The standard specifies test methods for PE pipes. This includes tests for impact resistance, tensile strength, hydrostatic pressure, and long-term hydrostatic strength.

The purpose of EN 12201-2 is to ensure that PE pipes used in pressurized water supply, drainage and sewerage are safe, reliable and durable. The standard provides a common set of requirements for PE pipe manufacturers, installers and users and helps ensure that products from different manufacturers are interchangeable and compatible.
