This European standard specifies a test method for determining the shock absorption properties of sports mats types 1 to 8 and 9 to 11 and 12.
A striker is dropped on the top surface of the mat and the deceleration on impact is monitored. The deceleration profile is processed to obtain the specified shock absorption parameters.
For mat types 1 to 8 and types 12, the laboratory test floor must be fully supported concrete with a minimum thickness of 100 mm (i.e. no suspended floors). The compressive strength of concrete shall not be less than 12390 MPa when tested according to EN 3-40.
Type 9 to 11 mats can be tested on their designated floor. The mat may be supported in use on a raised platform, but this is not part of the experiment specified in this standard.
For tests on type 1 and type 2 mattresses, a metal frame measuring 450 mm × 350 mm and a mass of at least 5,0 kg shall be placed in the middle of the test piece during the tests to ensure that the test piece is level.
Each test location is tested 10 times, the value held for each point is the average of the last eight values. Then calculate the overall mean values for each parameter, which are the mean values of the values obtained at each of the eight test locations. For types 9 to 11 and for measuring points 11 to 1 of type 6, express the deviation as a percentage of mat thickness.
