The longitudinal deformations of a specimen are measured under foundation and upper uniaxial compressive stresses. The static elastic modulus is calculated from these values.

The surfaces on which the load will be applied must be flat with a tolerance of 0,1 mm and should not deviate from perpendicularity to the sample axis by more than 0,01 radians or 100 mm per 1 mm. The edges of the sample should be smooth and free of sudden irregularities and should be flat within 0,3 mm along the entire length of the sample.

To meet the above-mentioned requirements, the sample must be finished on a lathe or surface grinder, if necessary with a final touch on a lapping machine.

The sample should be placed centrally on the testing machine and aligned so that the top plate is in full contact with the sample.
