This standard provides information on the selection, installation, use and maintenance of apparatus for the detection of carbon monoxide intended for continuous operation in a fixed installation in homes, caravans and boats.
The purpose of this standard is to cover accommodation in any type of home or residence, including recreational accommodation such as mobile and static caravans and caravans.
The manufacturer must provide appropriate instructions for the correct and safe installation of the apparatus and indicate on the apparatus and its packaging that these instructions must be read carefully before installing or operating the apparatus. The design and layout of domestic buildings, caravans and boats and the number, type and location of carbon monoxide sources vary greatly.
Ideally, an apparatus should be placed in each room containing a fuel-burning device, and additional apparatus should be installed to ensure that adequate warning is given to occupants in other rooms by placing the apparatus.
If the house is a bedroom (a single room that serves as both a living and a bedroom), the apparatus should be positioned as far as possible from cooking appliances, but close to where the person sleeps. If the device is in a room that is not normally used frequently (eg boiler room), the device should be positioned so that the alarm can be heard more easily. Alternatively, an interlocking device or a remote alarm siren can be connected to a type A device located in rooms containing a fuel-burning device.
