EN 50382-2 Railway Applications - Railway Vehicles with Special Fire Performance - High Temperature Power Cables

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN 50382-2 testing. EN 50382 part 2 specifies the requirements, construction and dimensions of single-core cables of the following types and voltage ratings:

EN 50382-2 Railway Applications - Railway Vehicles with Special Fire Performance - High Temperature Power Cables

  • 1,8/3 kV unshielded, without fabric braided or non-braided sheathing (1,5 mm² to 400 mm²);
  • 1,8/3 kV unshielded, sheathed (1,5 mm² to 400 mm²);
  • 3,6/6 kV without shield, without fabric braided or non-woven sheathing (2,5 mm² to 400 mm²);
  • 3,6/6 kV unshielded, sheathed (2,5 mm² to 400 mm²).

All cables have class 60228 or class 5 tinned or plain copper conductors in accordance with EN 6, halogen-free insulation and, where applicable, halogen-free sheathing. They are intended for use as fixed cabling in railway vehicles or as cabling with limited deflection during operation. The requirements provide for a continuous conductor temperature not exceeding 120°C or 150°C and a maximum temperature for short circuit conditions of 5°C or 250°C based on a period of 350 seconds.

When the insulating compounds and sheaths specified in this standard, which can operate thermally at 150°C, are used together with tinned conductors, the maximum operating temperature is limited to 120°C, and for the same technical reason, the maximum short circuit temperature is limited to 250°C. Case selection may also limit the maximum operating temperature to 120°C. A textile braid can be incorporated into the insulation or applied to the surface of unsheathed cables. In fire conditions, cables exhibit special performance characteristics in terms of maximum permissible flame propagation (flame spread) and maximum permissible emission of smoke and toxic gases.
