EN ISO 10218-1 does not treat the robot as a complete machine. Noise emission by itself is generally not considered a significant hazard to the robot and as a result noise is excluded from the scope of EN ISO 10218-1. EN ISO 10218-1 does not apply to non-industrial robots, but the safety principles set out in EN ISO 10218 can be used for these other robots.
The machinery involved and the scope of hazards, hazardous situations and events are specified in the Scope of this part of EN ISO 10218. The hazards associated with robots are well known, but sources of hazards are often specific to a particular robot system. The number and type(s) of hazards are directly related to the nature of the automation process and the complexity of the installation. The risks associated with these hazards vary depending on the type of robot used, its purpose, and the way it is set up, programmed, operated and maintained.
Given the variable nature of the hazards in the different uses of industrial robots, EN ISO 10218 is divided into two parts. This part of EN ISO 10218 provides guidance for assuring safety in the design and construction of the robot. Since safety in the implementation of industrial robots is affected by the design and implementation of the particular robot system integration, EN ISO 10218-2 provides guidelines for personnel protection during robot integration, installation, functional testing, programming, operation, maintenance and repair.
