EN ISO 14916 specifies the procedure for determining the tensile bond strength of coatings thermally sprayed under tension in the direction normal to the surface of the coating by applying a tensile test. Using this procedure, the comparability of test results is ensured.
The purpose of the test is to determine the tensile adhesion strength between the thermally sprayed coating and the substrate material, or between the bond and the top coating, or the cohesion strength of the respective layer of the coating system. In some cases, thermally sprayed coatings may have more than two layers. The method outlined in this document also applies to the determination of the tensile bond strength between the interfaces of different layers in a coating system consisting of more than two layers.
This test is sufficient to compare coatings and thermal spray processes produced using the same or similar raw materials. The tensile adhesive strength test is not intended to provide absolute values for evaluating the durability of coatings under operational use.
The test is used to evaluate the effect of substrate preparation, spraying conditions and process parameter on the tensile adhesive strength of thermally sprayed coatings. It can also be used to monitor the consistency of production and spraying processes. This tensile test can also be applied to very thin coatings. In addition, leaching of bonding agent into thermally sprayed coatings with the required level of porosity can be minimized by using a suitable bonding agent (foil instead of liquid).
