EN ISO 20473 Standard Test Method for Optical and Photonic Spectral Bands

Most resin ophthalmic lenses, even if uncoloured, have good absorption in the 315 nm to 380 nm waveband, or can be treated without discoloration to have good absorption.

Some resin materials cannot be treated to absorb the 380 nm to 400 nm waveband, while others that can be treated in this way begin to show a pale yellow color change. This can be masked by adding a very small amount of blue dye, but this then causes a decrease in the light transmittance of the lens.

Two factors influence the effects of UV radiation for the unprotected eye: first, the intensity of solar radiation rises rapidly from the UV-B region to the infrared region; secondly, the bioactinic effect, or the ability of radiation to cause damage, declines rapidly. The product of the solar spectral radiation and the relative spectral efficiency function is the weighting function for calculating the effect of solar radiation on the eye.

Classifying the incremental waveband from 380 nm to 400 nm as UV rather than the visible spectrum has little effect on eye protection for the normal wearer, due to the low value of the weighting function towards the longer wavelength end of the UV-A spectrum.
