ISO 1133-2 Plastics - Determination of Melt Mass Flow Rate and Melt Volume Flow Rate of Thermoplastics - Part 2: Time-Temperature History or Method for Moisture Sensitive Materials

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 1133-2 testing. ISO 1133-2 specifies a procedure for determining the melt volume-flow rate (MVR) and melt mass-flow rate (MFR) of thermoplastic materials that exhibit a high rheological sensitivity to the time-temperature history experienced by the sample.

It is possible that this method is not suitable for materials whose rheological behavior is severely affected during testing.

MFR values can be determined by calculating from MVR measurements provided the melt density at test temperature and pressure is known, or by measuring using a cutting device, provided the accuracy of the measurement is at least the same as the MVR measurement.

The main difference between ISO 1133-2 and ISO 1133-1 is that ISO 1133-2 specifies tighter tolerances for the temperature in the cylinder and the time the material is exposed to that temperature. Thus, the material's time-temperature history is more tightly controlled, and as a result, the variability of test results is reduced for materials that are likely to be affected by exposure to high temperatures, compared to whether ISO 1133-1 specifications are used.

ISO 1133-2 also provides information for the preparation and processing of moisture sensitive materials, which is also critical to obtaining repeatable, reproducible and accurate data.

Test conditions for the measurement of MVR and MFR are usually specified in the material standard. However, for materials that do not have the test conditions specified in the material standard, test conditions must be agreed upon by the relevant parties.
