The method can be applied to polyolefin pipes and fittings, as well as to raw materials in pellet form, with the choice of procedure to be determined by the relevant specification.

Small pellets of raw material or material removed from the tube or fitting are heated and compressed between microscope slides. Alternatively, a microtome slice can be taken.

This method provides procedures for evaluating the degree of dispersion through physical measurement of the size of dispersed particles and arithmetic grading of the particle size distribution.

It also provides photographs for comparison with microscopic images of samples from the raw material compound or products to subjectively assess the acceptability of the carbon black or pigment distribution.
