ISO 4577 Plastics - Test for Polypropylene and Propylene Copolymers

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 4577 testing. This standard specifies a method for determining the resistance to heat accelerated aging in the presence of air of molded test specimens of polypropylene and propylene-copolymers using a forced draft furnace.

ISO 4577 Plastics - Test for Polypropylene and Propylene Copolymers

The method represents an attempt to predict the service life of parts made of propylene plastic. The stability determined by this method is not directly related to the suitability of the material for use in different environmental conditions.

Accelerated aging of test specimens is carried out with heat in the presence of air using a forced draft furnace. Visual inspection and determination of the time elapsed until failure is made.

Under the severe conditions of this test, samples degrade at a rate dependent on the thermal stability of the propylene plastic under examination. For the purposes of this standard, the time to breakage of the material is taken as the number of days the sample exhibits local cracking, chipping or discoloration.

If a more reliable estimate of the lifetime-temperature relationship of propylene plastics is required, the test can be performed at several temperatures and the data interpreted using the Arrhenius relationship; In Kelvin. For this purpose, temperatures in the range of 100°C to 150°C are recommended in 10°C intervals.

Thermometers should cover a temperature range of up to 200°C and be rated at intervals of 1°C or better. Each thermometer should be tested for bulb stability and calibrated at 150°C. It is recommended to use at least two thermometers, one at the top and one at the bottom of the oven working volume, to control the homogeneity of the temperature inside the oven. The test temperature is the average value of the indicators of the two thermometers.
