It can be applied to paper and cardboard with air permeability between 0,1 µm/(Pa⋅s) and 100 µm/(Pa⋅s) when tested with the Gurley apparatus. Not suitable for rough-surfaced materials that cannot be securely clamped to prevent leakage. ISO 5636-5 can also be used to determine the air resistance of paper and board.
Air is compressed by the weight of a vertical cylinder floating in a liquid. A test piece is in contact with compressed air and the cylinder drops steadily as the air passes through the test piece. The time it takes for a given volume of air to pass through the test piece, ie air resistance, is measured and air permeability is calculated from there.
If the average quality of a lot is to be determined, sampling should comply with ISO 186. If tests are performed on another sample type, it should be ensured that the test pieces taken are representative of the sample taken.
Cut at least 10 test pieces and identify the two sides, for example side 1 and side 2. The test area should be free of folds, wrinkles, holes, watermarks or defects that are not specific to the specimen. Do not touch the part of the test piece that will become part of the test area. A sufficient test piece size is 100 mm x 100 mm.
