ISO 8791-3 is applicable to paper and board with Sheffield roughness values ​​between 10 ml/min and approximately 3000 ml/min. Not suitable for soft papers that allow the edges of the test head to indent the surface, or high air permeability papers that allow significant airflow through the sheet, or papers that will not lie flat during testing.

This part of ISO 8791 describes one of several methods for determining the roughness of paper and board with an air leak method. Because these methods are based on different geometric designs and use different air pressures and subject the test piece to different compression pressures, they give different numerical results. General requirements for such tests are described in ISO 8791-1.

A test piece is clamped between a flat plate and two flat concentric circular areas. Air is supplied at a certain pressure to the space between the two soils and the air flow rate between the soils and the test piece is measured. Airflow rate is a measure of the roughness of the test piece.
