ISO 9211-3 Optics and Photonics - Optical Coatings - Part 3: Environmental Durability

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 9211-3 testing. ISO 9211 defines the surface treatment of components and substrates, excluding ophthalmic optics (spectacles), by the application of optical coatings, and gives a standard form for their specifications. Defines general characteristics and test and measurement methods when necessary. It is not intended to describe the process method.

ISO 9211-3 Optics and Photonics - Optical Coatings - Part 3: Environmental Durability

ISO 9211-3 specifies use categories for optical coatings and defines what environmental tests are required to prove coatings meet required specifications.

Category A

This category refers to components in applications that normally only apply when they are to be installed internally in sealed units. In this category, handling is done in a protected and controlled environment and should only be done with extreme care. Physical contact with the optically coated surface is not recommended.

Category B

This category refers to applications where components will be exposed only to a controlled environment. Such applications may include light wear, as with carefully controlled cleaning.

Category C

This category refers to applications where components will be exposed to normal outdoor conditions and cleaning, but not subject to severe wear and scratches.

Category D

This category refers to applications where components will be exposed to severe outdoor conditions and uncontrolled cleaning with the risk of severe wear and scratches.

Category O

This category refers to applications that require special, non-standard features. In such cases, the recommended way of specifying in such a case is to specify the category that satisfies most requirements first, as the properties of the components will not fit perfectly into one of the categories A to D. Exceptional requirements can then be specified from other categories or by specifying the severity of the test.

It should be noted that it is not the coating that determines the usage category, but the entire coating-substrate combination. For example, coatings on glass that normally meet category C may not do so when applied to sensitive or unstable substrates. This can become evident, for example, in rain, solubility, humidity, heat and salt spray tests.
