This International Standard is used in a number of situations where the permanent elongation of the conveyor belt after mechanical conditioning is of practical importance, and in particular in the application of ISO 3870 and ISO 5293.
ISO 9856 specifies a method for determining the elastic and permanent elongation of a conveyor belt and calculating the elastic modulus. Applicable or not applicable to light conveyor belts as described in ISO 21183-1.
A test piece cut in the longitudinal direction through the entire thickness of the conveyor belt is subjected to a sinusoidally varying force within defined limits. After 200 cycles, the amount of permanent elongation of the test piece and the amount of elastic elongation produced by the force difference are recorded from a force-extension graph.
Special application conveyor belts can be used with higher elongation in the tensile element. The permanent elongation measured according to the test procedure specified for these belts does not allow a conclusion to be drawn regarding the permanent elongation of the belt in real-life operation. A greater number of load cycles (jointly agreed upon by the supplier and customer) may help.
