It is designed for the analysis of natural and purified water and wastewater and can be used directly for water with an alkalinity concentration of up to 20 mmol/l.

For samples with higher concentrations of alkalinity, a smaller test portion may be used for analysis. The recommended lower limit is 0,4 mmol/l.

The sample is titrated with standard acid solution to fixed pH endpoint values ​​of 8,3 and 4,5. These endpoints, determined visually or potentiometrically, are the equivalence points chosen to identify the three main components: hydrogen carbonate, carbonate and hydroxide.

The pH 8,3 endpoint is close to equivalent carbonate and carbon dioxide concentrations and represents a titration of approximately all hydroxide and half of the carbonate present.

This pH 4,5 endpoint approaches the equivalence point for the hydrogen ion and hydrogen carbonate and allows the total alkalinity of the sample to be determined.
