NFPA 285 Standard Fire Test for Evaluating Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Wall Assemblies Containing Flammable Components

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of NFPA 285 standard. NFPA 285 provides a method for determining the flammability characteristics of non-load bearing exterior wall assemblies. The test method is designed to evaluate combustible components inside the wall. The test simulates the multiplex fire performance of the entire wall mount.

NFPA 285 Standard Fire Test for Evaluating Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Wall Assemblies Containing Flammable Components

The NFPA 285 tester is a two-story wall mount that includes a window opening on the first floor. Pass/Fail criteria are given and are based on flame propagation and temperatures inside the wall as assembly. Flame spread must not occur vertically or laterally beyond an acceptable distance. Temperatures are measured using thermocouples placed in the wall mount.

Meeting the performance requirements of NFPA 285 is determined by analysis of NFPA 285 fire test data from testing in accordance with NFPA 1354 and ASTM E285.

In addition to NFPA 285, small scale tests are conducted in accordance with ASTM E1354, Standard Test Method for Heat and Visible Smoke Emission Rates for Materials and Products Using Oxygen Consumption Calorimetry (Cone Calorimeter Test), where various fire performance characteristics are calculated.

Assemblies are to special construction materials installed as described.
is based on. Changes or modifications to the construction and/or materials used in the assemblies tested may result in a different fire performance and may not meet the performance requirements of NFPA 285.

Testing of water resistant barrier (WRB) products in assemblies is not specifically required in the 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2009 Editions of the International Building Code (IBC). In these versions of the building code, an exterior wall assembly that must meet NFPA 285 must be built for testing to contain all flammable materials and products for which compliance is sought.

In the 2012 Edition of the IBC, a new section of code was added that specifically required testing WRB materials on wall mounts. Section 1403.5, type I, II, III, and IV structures, 40 ft. above ground plane. Requires exterior walls that are above and contain a flammable water-resistant barrier to meet the requirements of NFPA 285. According to this code requirement, all combustible WRB materials must be tested to NFPA 285 criteria, even if the wall mount, with the exception of the WRB, is not required to meet NFPA 285.
